Send to Readest — Privacy Policy

About this extension

Send to Readest is a browser extension that saves the web page you are viewing into your personal Readest library as a self-contained EPUB. This policy describes what the extension accesses, where that data goes, and what it never does. The extension does one thing: when you click its toolbar button, it captures the current page and sends it to your Readest account. It does nothing in the background, and it collects nothing unless you explicitly trigger a clip.

Information We Access

Only when you click "Send to Readest" on a page:

  • Page content: The extension reads the rendered article text and images of the active tab, extracts the readable article, and sanitizes the HTML. This is the content you are choosing to clip.
  • Images on the page: To build a self-contained EPUB that opens offline, the extension downloads the images the page references. These requests reuse your existing browser session for that site, so images behind a login or paywall capture the same content you can already see.

Separately, only on Readest’s own sites (such as web.readest.com), a small script copies your existing Readest sign-in token into the extension so the upload can be authenticated to your account. The extension never stores your password or a long-lived refresh token, and never asks you to enter credentials.

Where Your Data Goes

The EPUB the extension builds (the page content and its images) is uploaded only to your own Readest account and synced to your devices. The upload is authenticated with the Readest access token described above. Nothing is sent anywhere else.

What the Extension Does Not Do

  • It does not sell or rent your data to anyone.
  • It does not share your data with third parties for advertising, analytics, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to clipping a page.
  • It does not track your browsing history or monitor pages in the background. Capture happens only when you click.
  • It does not include third-party analytics or trackers.
  • It does not download or execute remote code. All processing libraries are bundled in the extension and run locally in your browser.

Permissions, in Plain Terms

  • Access to the page you clip: needed to read the page’s content and fetch its images when you click the button. Broad site access exists because you may clip any page.
  • Storage: caches your Readest token and an optional custom server URL locally.
  • Offscreen document: used internally to assemble the EPUB file.

Data Retention

The extension itself stores only your Readest access token, and an optional custom server URL, in your browser’s local extension storage. Removing the extension clears this. Clipped books live in your Readest account; you can manage or delete them there.

Relationship to the Readest Privacy Policy

The extension is part of the Readest product. Your Readest account data is governed by the main Readest Privacy Policy. This page covers the data practices specific to the Send to Readest browser extension.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in the extension. Any updates will be posted on this page, and the "Last updated" date above will change to reflect them.
